I taught today–a class on creative problem solving for writers. It’s a subject that I’m very passionate about and while I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not an expert on craft (POV, dialogue, setting and the like–I need THAT same sort of help myself), but I’m 100% at home on helping people [...]

Julia Cameron thinks that it can. Her latest book, The Writing Diet–Write Yourself the Right-Size, touts the idea that when you are creative and you focus your efforts on “counting words not calories” that you can also lose weight in the process.

One of the authors on my massive lifelong booklist is Mervyn Peake, and in particular, his Titus novels, more oftenly known as Gormenghast, although that is only the title for the second book.

With NANOWRIMO around the corner, I thought I would share some info on some of the tools that I use to help further my writing.
First off, in my last post I mentioned Holly Lisle’s great guides to writing fiction and building worlds, e-books that are unlike any writing book you’ll encounter in a book store, [...]

I’m teaching a course at the wonderful Grub Street on creative writing exercises–unusual ones that I developed as part of my M.A. in Critical & Creative Thinking. My next class is specifically on developing brainstorming maps for writers. Visually exploring plots, characters and themes is something that most writers don’t do very often. We tend [...]

The unexamined life is not worth living. ~ Socrates
On Wednesday I taught a class that centers around a series of creative writing exercises that I developed as part of my Masters in Critical & Creative Thinking thesis. This week we talked about asking questions of ourselves, our characters and our stories. Read on to discover [...]
